MOORINGS
Summary
At G&H Services, we specialize in creating new mooring sites and renovating existing ones to enhance access and safety at the waterside. Our tailored solutions ensure that each mooring site is optimized based on specific site conditions and meets the highest standards.
Key Features and Considerations
Customised Solutions
The specifications of each mooring site depend on the site conditions and agreements with organizations such as the Broads Authority and other consenting bodies. We offer expert advice on all aspects of mooring projects and work closely with you and relevant authorities to ensure your moorings are built to the highest standards.
Environmental Considerations
We are mindful of environmental impacts. For example, tie rods can affect the root systems of nearby trees, leading to tree death. If you’re planning a mooring near trees, we can suggest suitable alternatives to minimize environmental disruption.
Cost Factors
The cost of moorings depends on the size, quantity, and type of moorings required. We provide guidance on the best solutions based on your location and needs, ensuring a balance between cost and quality.
Types of Moorings
Timber Staging
Description: Piling at the waterside with decking on the bankside.
Features: Allows wildlife access and vegetation growth. Suitable for rivers or broads with minimal tidal range. Regular maintenance required; high upkeep cost. Medium cost compared to other types.
Maintenance: Decking needs regular cleaning; piling replacement every 10 years.
Quay Heading & Piling
Description: Robust structure suitable for most tidal ranges.
Features: Modified vertical edge with high visual impact at low tide. Steel is the most expensive material, followed by plastic and timber. Lifespan: Timber up to 10 years, plastic and steel around 40 years. Consider vertical fenders/rubbing strips for high tidal areas.
Maintenance: Surfacing and capping must be leveled and topped up regularly; ensure proper drainage.
Pontoons
Description: Quick installation; requires secure anchorage or piling.
Features: Suitable for mid to high tidal ranges and wider navigations or broads. Not viable in narrow channels. Lifespan up to 30 years; regular deck cleaning needed. Environmental benefits: Protects natural bank, provides refuge for fish.
Maintenance: Regular deck cleaning required.
